Don starts the meeting and lightens the mood with a joke about being on the wrong coast. Alan responds with a political joke, that “the problem’s not on the coasts, it’s in the middle”.
Don is a new board chair for this working group. Bio: former Pokemon chief legal officer, product safety for children, invited by Molly. Says magnts cross kids/adult products.
Problem space: develop magnet standard for non-children’s products. Craig Q: Why not just toy committee? Don: magnets often go to kids, so safety must bridge both. Alan: key is whether to use current test method or modify before ballot. Craig: Flux Index has issues with non-flat surfaces, not replicable/repeatable even with same magnets across labs. Stephen: does safety standard help? Ben: CPSC’s refined method (e.g., tape) shows method can be reliable if done right. Ed: results vary, hard to find pole on small magnets. Josh: CPSC’s method works, should be adopted as common starting point.
CPSC asked to provide their current test methodology (SOP/video) for group. Craig proposed measuring direct pull force instead of flux index. Jacqueline: CPSC prioritizes safety, wants accurate/precise standard. If current method is imprecise, that’s a problem, not just “could be better.” Don: asked attendees to submit written thoughts for future discussion. Shihan: confirmed a few physics points, supported video/methodology request.
Don will send doodle poll. Jacqueline said CPSC already sent full methodology & video. Also offered CPSC lab for in-person meeting/demos. Josh supported more labs being aware. Alan: if CPSC method works, doesn’t see why not to refer to it. Craig Q: Lab testing for adult magnets (ferrite, irregular) not done yet for balloting rule. These magnets need testing.
Action Items: Make suggestions as to who else should be in this group? Don asked folks to write up thoughts on testing precision/accuracy. Don will send July dates for next meeting. Jacqueline will check CPSC capacity for hosting lab meeting.
Meeting took about 1 hour.
